Molecular modelers rely heavily on labeling to annotate and make sense of their complex structures. However, when dealing with large systems, labels can quickly clutter the workspace, making it difficult to focus on key structural features. Knowing how to efficiently manage the visibility of labels is crucial for a streamlined workflow and clear visualization. Let’s walk through how to control the visibility of labels in SAMSON effectively.
Adjusting Label Visibility
Managing label visibility in SAMSON is intuitive and allows for better control of your modeling workspace:
- You can quickly toggle the visibility of labels using the Document view. By ticking or unticking the label visibility box, you can decide which labels are displayed.
- SAMSON automatically adjusts label visibility based on the zoom level. As you zoom out, labels for smaller nodes, such as atoms, will disappear, while labels for larger nodes, like molecules, will appear. This allows you to maintain a clear overview of your model depending on the scale you’re working with.

Customizing When Labels Appear
Sometimes, the automatic adjustments might not fit perfectly with your modeling needs. Fortunately, SAMSON gives you the ability to fine-tune when labels appear and disappear based on the zoom level:
- To modify these settings, select a label and open the Inspector.
- In the Inspector, you can set Maximum display radius and Minimum display radius. These parameters define the zoom levels at which labels are visible.
This feature is especially useful when you want labels for key atoms or residues to remain visible as you zoom in, while hiding less-critical labels to reduce clutter.

Why It Matters
Imagine analyzing a large macromolecular assembly. Without proper label management, essential structural features might get lost in the noise. By combining the automatic zoom-dependent label adjustment with manual control using the Inspector, you can focus on the most critical areas of your model without unnecessary distractions. This level of customization ensures clarity and efficiency in your analysis.
