One of the key challenges molecular modelers often face is presenting complex molecular data with clarity and precision. SAMSON’s powerful Animator tool offers a solution with its range of animations, and today, we’ll dive into the ‘Appear’ animation—a feature designed to bring your molecular models to life.
What is the ‘Appear’ Animation?
The Appear animation is a tool that allows nodes in molecular models to progressively appear by adjusting their transparency. This effect is particularly versatile and applicable to nodes like structural models, visual models, meshes, or labels—essentially, any node that possesses a transparency attribute. For nodes without transparency attributes, this animation behaves similarly to the ‘Show’ animation.
However, keep in mind that individual atoms and bonds do not have transparency attributes. To animate their transparency, you must apply the effect to their parent structural models, which do support this property.
How to Use the ‘Appear’ Animation
Adding and customizing the ‘Appear’ animation is straightforward. Follow these steps to make the most of it:
- Select the nodes you want to progressively appear.
- In the Animation panel of the Animator, double-click the ‘Appear’ animation effect.
- Customize the animation using its 4 keyframes:
- Keyframes 1 to 2: Nodes remain fully transparent.
- Keyframes 2 to 3: Nodes progressively lose transparency, starting to appear.
- Keyframes 3 to 4: Nodes become fully opaque, with no transparency.
- Adjust and move the keyframes to achieve the desired timing and effect.
The flexibility to modify keyframes ensures that you can sync the animation perfectly with other visual elements in your project.
Fine-Tuning the Animation
For those who need precision, the ‘Appear’ animation allows further customization through the Easing curve. This controls how parameters change between frames, enabling smooth transitions and more natural presentations. Experimenting with the Easing curve can help create visually stunning movements tailored to your specific molecular model.
Visual Example
Here’s a quick visual demo of the ‘Appear’ animation:

In this example, you can see how nodes transition smoothly from complete transparency to full opacity, creating an engaging and professional presentation.
Why Use the ‘Appear’ Animation?
This animation adds a dynamic layer to your molecular presentations, making it easier to highlight specific molecular structures or features. It is particularly useful for creating tutorials, educational material, or simply improving the visual clarity of complex molecular systems.
