Streamline Molecular Presentations with the Record Path Animation

For molecular modelers, creating presentations that showcase the intricate movements of atoms can be time-consuming and technically challenging. SAMSON’s Record Path animation tool provides a clear and effective solution for tracking atomic trajectories. This functionality is particularly useful when you need to document or highlight dynamic molecular processes, as it enables you to record atom movements into a path with ease.

Why Use the Record Path Animation?

The animation is designed to simplify the process of tracking atomic positions during presentations. By automatically creating a track that records the trajectories of atoms, you can effectively visualize complex motion. This feature is especially valuable when used alongside other animations that influence atomic positions, such as Simulate, Dock, or Move Atoms, among others.

Adding the Animation

To add the Record Path animation, simply double-click on it within the Animation panel of the Animator. A keyframe will be placed at the current frame, and you can adjust its position as needed.

Once the animation is applied, the track displays in two colors that indicate recording progress:

  • Green segments: Positions have been successfully recorded.
  • Red segments: Positions have not yet been recorded or have become invalid.

Tips for Enhanced Usage

The functionality of the Record Path animation is enriched with useful tips:

  • The animation executes from top to bottom in the Animator. To ensure accurate recordings, place the Record Path animation below the animations you want to track.
  • To improve performance while working on a presentation, consider disabling path recording. Right-click on the animation in the Animator or use the Inspector to toggle Enable Recording. Disabled recordings appear darkened.
  • You can move animation keyframes to fine-tune the timing as needed.

Exporting the Path

Once your path recording is complete and the animation track turns fully green, you can easily export the recorded path for further use. To do so, choose one of these two methods:

  • In the animation’s Inspector, click on Create Path.
  • Right-click the Record Path animation in the Animator and select Create Path.

This turns the recorded trajectory into a reusable Path node, making it easy to store or incorporate into subsequent molecular modeling tasks.
