Molecular modelers often face the challenge of adapting their tools to ever-evolving research demands. From advanced simulations to custom analysis workflows, having access to the right toolset can save hours of work and boost accuracy. This is where SAMSON Extensions help researchers by enabling them to customize and enhance their SAMSON installations effortlessly. In this blog post, we will explore how SAMSON Extensions work and how to add or manage them efficiently through the SAMSON Connect Marketplace.
What Are SAMSON Extensions?
SAMSON Extensions are modular add-ons that expand the capabilities of the SAMSON platform. Researchers can access plugins for molecular modeling, simulations, and data analysis tailored to their specific needs. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned expert, SAMSON Extensions provide a flexible way to unlock powerful features, such as advanced molecular dynamics, visualization tools, or even custom scripting capabilities.
How to Access SAMSON Extensions
The central hub to browse and manage extensions is the Marketplace on SAMSON Connect. This intuitive platform enables you to:
- Search for new extensions that suit your workflows.
- Add free extensions directly to your SAMSON installation with a single click.
- Request trials or subscribe to premium extensions if required.
- Manage previously added extensions and remove those no longer needed.

Adding Freely Available Extensions
If an extension is freely available, simply click the Add button after signing in to your SAMSON Connect account. Once added, the extension will be marked as “Added”:

To activate the extension, restart SAMSON, and it will automatically download and install the selected module.
Subscription and Trial Options
For extensions available through a subscription, signed-in users can test their functionality during a trial period by clicking the Request trial button. No credit card information is required. During the trial, the extension will be marked as “Trying”:

If you decide to subscribe, select from monthly, yearly, or academic plans. Academic researchers often benefit from tailored subscriptions:

After subscribing, the extension will be marked as “Subscribed” and become part of your SAMSON toolkit.
Easily Removing Extensions
Removing unused extensions is just as simple. Navigate to the Marketplace or Account > Settings section on SAMSON Connect. Go to the page of the extension you want to remove, hover over the “Added” button (which will switch to “Remove”), and click it:

Restart SAMSON to finalize the removal process. Don’t worry—extensions you remove will still appear under View my extensions if you wish to reinstall them later.
Why SAMSON Extensions Matter
SAMSON Extensions enable molecular modelers to stay agile by tailoring their setups to specific research challenges. With the Marketplace’s user-friendly design, you’re always a few clicks away from tools that improve productivity and precision. Whether you’re simulating drug interactions or analyzing biomolecular pathways, SAMSON Extensions make it easy to focus on what truly matters: advancing science.
