- Screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO): This approach provides a quick yet approximate simulation of light occlusion. While efficient, it is sensitive to the distance between the molecule and the camera.
- Object-space ambient occlusion (OSAO): A more realistic but computationally intensive method. SSAO, however, is often sufficient and significantly improves depth perception.
How to Enable and Customize Ambient Occlusion
To utilize ambient occlusion in SAMSON effectively, you can adjust your settings according to your visualization needs. The settings can be easily accessed through the Preferences panel under the Rendering > Ambient Occlusion section. Here, you can tweak the strength and other parameters for optimal results.

For instant adjustments, you can also toggle screen-space ambient occlusion on or off with a single click in the Visualization > Options menu. This flexibility makes it easier to experiment and quickly find the best setup for your needs.
