What is the Truck Camera Animation?

The Truck camera animation is a feature that moves the camera and its target point horizontally (in the camera’s reference frame) between two keyframes. Both the position of the camera and its target point shift parallelly, ensuring that the focus remains intact during transitions. This is especially useful when your molecular model is aligned horizontally, or when you want to visually explore complex systems in lateral directions.

The animation can also work seamlessly with vertical camera movement by switching to the related Pedestal camera animation. Together, these features let you create dynamic yet controlled visualizations to better illustrate your findings.

How to Use the Truck Camera Animation

Here are step-by-step instructions to make the most out of this feature:

  1. Start by choosing the desired start frame in the Animator’s Track view. Orient the view or position the camera as you’d like it to be at the beginning of the animation.
  2. Locate and double-click the Truck camera effect in the Animation panel. This creates the animation effect using the chosen camera’s current position and target point as the starting frame.
  3. The animation automatically shifts the camera and target point horizontally (to the right by default) for the end frame.
  4. Adjust the duration and end frame of the animation in the timeline to match your project requirements.

Fine-Tuning the Animation

One of the strengths of SAMSON’s animation tools is the flexibility to refine your settings:

  • You can reposition both the start and end frames anytime if the initial setup needs adjustments.
  • Camera animations apply by default to the active camera, which corresponds to the view’s current center. You can modify this by inspecting the animation and changing the Apply to active camera option.
  • To influence how the camera moves between the frames, you can adjust the Easing curve, allowing smoother or more dynamic transitions.

Keep in mind that the behavior of the camera may slightly change depending on whether the grid is switched on or off. The Keep camera upwards option lets you control this behavior to better suit your orientations.
