For molecular modelers and scientists working on collaborative projects, sharing resources like documents effectively is a critical task. Whether you are collaboratively annotating research or sharing datasets, managing who can access, view, or edit your shared files is essential. SAMSON Connect offers a versatile document-sharing system with clear visibility options to tailor collaboration. Let’s explore how to make the best use of these options to streamline your workflow while maintaining control over your resources.
Types of Document Visibility
SAMSON Connect allows you to determine the accessibility of your documents through three intuitive visibility settings:
- Public: These documents are visible to everyone. Anyone can view or use them. However, editing still requires specific access rights.
- Hidden: These documents are accessible only via a direct link. Editing still requires access rights.
- Restricted: These documents are fully controlled. Both viewing and editing require granted access rights.
By default, every document you upload will have its visibility set to Restricted. This ensures privacy and control until you explicitly decide otherwise.
How to Share a Document
To share a document, simply follow these steps:
- Open your SAMSON application and navigate to Home > Publish.
- In the dialog window that opens, provide a name for your document and include a description if necessary.
- Choose the appropriate visibility option: Public, Hidden, or Restricted.
After publishing, the document will be available on SAMSON Connect – Documents, where you can further manage its settings or share the provided link.

Managing Shared Documents
SAMSON Connect features a Documents section where you can manage documents you published or those shared with you. As the document’s owner, you can adjust settings such as its name, description, and visibility:
- Edit settings: Change document details like the name or description.
- Grant access: Share editing or viewing rights on a per-user or per-group basis.

Granting Access Rights
Another powerful feature in SAMSON Connect is the ability to grant access rights. As a document owner:
- You can control access based on the chosen visibility options (Public, Hidden, or Restricted).
- You can assign specific permissions to individual users or groups.

By using groups, you can facilitate easier organization and ensure that entire teams can collaborate effortlessly on shared resources.
Why It Matters
Tailored visibility settings and robust access control help ensure smooth operations in collaborative environments. Whether you want to share molecular models for wider access or limit research data to trusted collaborators, understanding these features in SAMSON Connect is vital. Leveraging these tools saves time, secures sensitive information, and fosters collaboration in a way that adapts to your specific needs.
