A molecular modeling session can be delayed before it even begins: the installer cannot reach the download service, a license key is hard to find, or the setup stops at a network prompt. A little preparation can make the installation process more predictable. This guide focuses on the checks that help prevent those common snags, from downloading the right installer to getting through the first launch.
Start with three checks
Before downloading anything, confirm that your operating system and graphics hardware meet SAMSON’s supported requirements. The Requirements and platforms page is the place to check compatibility. This is especially useful if you are setting up a lab workstation or using a machine with more than one graphics card.
Next, make sure you can sign in to SAMSON Connect and locate your SAMSON key. The installer asks for the email address associated with your account and the key. You can find the key under Account > Settings on SAMSON Connect, and on the download page. Having both details ready avoids pausing midway through setup.
Finally, consider whether your network uses a proxy. The installer needs to reach SAMSON Connect to download SAMSON and its Extensions. If you work on a managed institutional network, it may be worth checking proxy details with your IT administrator before starting.
Download and check the connection
- Open the SAMSON download page.
- Sign in or create an account, then download the installer for your operating system.
- Start the installer and use Test connection if your network requires proxy settings.
A successful connection check displays “SAMSON Connect reached successfully.” If the check fails, enter the proxy parameters provided by your network administrator and test again before proceeding. This separates a connection problem from later installation steps and can save time when troubleshooting.

The installer guides you through the license agreement, optional proxy configuration, account details, installation mode, and download. In advanced mode, you can choose a custom installation path and select a specific SAMSON version. If you need an older release, consult the instructions for installing an older version before choosing.

Linux: launch the installer from a terminal
On Linux, open a terminal in your Downloads folder, make the downloaded file executable, and launch it with the command below:
|
1 2 3 |
cd ~/Downloads chmod +x ./SAMSON-Setup.run QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb ./SAMSON-Setup.run |
The chmod command grants permission to run the installer; the final command starts it. If you encounter OpenGL or dependency issues, use the Troubleshooting guide rather than guessing at changes to your system.

After setup
When the download and installation are complete, the final installer screen lets you start SAMSON. For your first launch, follow Starting SAMSON. You can then explore SAMSON Extensions to customize your setup.
Extensions are updated for the latest SAMSON version and are updated automatically when you launch the application. SAMSON also checks for updates regularly; you can invoke an update manually through Interface menu > Update SAMSON. If you use macOS and file access is limited, see the instructions for Full Disk Access in macOS.
A useful installation checklist is simple: verify compatibility, keep your account email and key handy, confirm network access, and use the platform-specific instructions when needed. For the complete procedure and screenshots, see the SAMSON installation guide.
Note: SAMSON and all SAMSON Extensions are free for non-commercial use. Get SAMSON.
