The Right Molecular Tool, Without the Installation Guesswork

A molecular modeling task rarely stays confined to one tool. You may need an extension for a particular workflow, only to discover that you are unsure whether it supports your operating system, your SAMSON version, or your account plan. Installing tools one by one without checking can waste time—and make it harder to keep track of what you actually use.

SAMSON Connect’s Marketplace provides a place to inspect, add, try, and manage SAMSON Extensions. A little planning before you click can make the process more predictable.

Start with the extension’s details

When you open an extension’s Marketplace page, check its description and authors, then look at the supported operating systems and the extension and SAMSON versions listed there. This is a useful first filter: confirm that the extension is relevant to your task and listed for your environment before changing your installation.

Next, check how the extension is offered. Extensions may be included with your current plan, freely available to add, or available through a subscription. These are different access routes, so knowing which one applies helps you decide what to do next.

Choose the lowest-commitment path that fits

If an extension is freely available, a signed-in user can select Add. SAMSON downloads and installs it automatically after you restart the application. Keep that restart in mind when planning your work: adding the extension on the website does not mean it is ready in an already-running SAMSON session.

Add a free SAMSON Extension

If the extension is subscription-based, the Marketplace may offer a trial or subscription. The documented trial request does not require credit card information. If you already know you need ongoing access, review the available monthly or yearly options; an academic plan may be available if you have academic status. Once you choose, the extension’s status is shown on its Marketplace page, which gives you a quick way to check whether it is added, being tried, or subscribed.

Keep your installation tidy

It is easy to focus on adding a tool and forget about reviewing it later. If you no longer need a free extension, sign in to SAMSON Connect, open the extension’s page through the Marketplace or Account > Settings > View my extensions, and use Remove. The button appears when you hover over the Added button. Restart SAMSON for the removal to take effect.

For paid extensions, manage access from Account > Settings > View my subscriptions. The My Subscriptions page is where you manage subscriptions. Removing an extension from your installation and managing its subscription are related but distinct tasks, so check the relevant page for the action you intend to take. Removed extensions remain visible in your account’s extensions list, making it easier to add them again later.

A short check before you begin

  • Match the tool to the task: read the extension description before adding it.
  • Check compatibility: confirm the listed operating systems and SAMSON versions.
  • Know the access type: identify whether it is included, free to add, or subscription-based.
  • Plan around restarts: additions and removals are applied when SAMSON restarts.
  • Review access periodically: use your account’s extensions and subscriptions pages to see what you have added or subscribed to.

This small routine can help keep your modeling setup aligned with the work in front of you, while making it easier to understand why an extension is—or is not—available in your installation.
