When creating molecular animations or scientific presentations, clarity and engagement are just as important as technical accuracy. One often overlooked detail that can drastically improve the quality and flow of molecular presentations is the background. A sudden background change between frames can be jarring and breaks visual continuity—something no presenter wants.
The Set background animation in SAMSON helps with exactly that. This feature allows molecular modelers and presenters to specify background colors or images and interpolate seamlessly between them. Whether you’re setting the mood with a dark theme for detailed structural insights or sliding between presentation slides and molecular visualizations, this tool can help your content breathe.
Why Set Background Matters
Scientists often need to present a narrative that weaves experimental data, simulated results, and visually complex molecular structures. Using background transitions with smooth interpolations keeps the audience engaged and supports a more polished storytelling experience. This is especially useful when:
- Switching between different parts of a molecule or molecular systems
- Transitioning between text slides and molecular visuals
- Directing attention using background tone and contrast
Simple Setup for Professional Results
To begin using the Set background animation in SAMSON, open the Animation panel in the Animator. From there:
- Double-click on the Set background effect.
- A keyframe will automatically be placed at the current frame (this becomes keyframe 1).
- The second keyframe marks the end of the background transition (keyframe 2). You can move these frames to control timing.
The background can be a color or an image, such as a logo, a diagram, or even an entire slide. Image backgrounds come with two layout options:
- Contain: Ensures the entire image fits within the viewport.
- Cover: Fills the frame but may crop edges depending on aspect ratio.
Interpolations: Making Transitions Feel Natural
SAMSON automatically interpolates between two Set background keyframes, giving you a smooth fade effect—no abrupt changes. This is especially powerful when using different background images or transitioning from a bright scene to a dark one (or vice versa). You can even control the interpolation behavior further using the Easing curve in the Inspector panel. Different easing curves (e.g., ease-in, ease-out, linear) let you control the speed of transition to suit your presentation style.
Example In Action

Above: In this animation, a background image is introduced and then gradually transitions to another background, making the visual flow fluid and coherent.
Pro tip
Don’t forget that you can always edit or move keyframes later. SAMSON is non-destructive in its timeline, so experimenting with different timing and easing options is totally safe.
