If you’re a molecular modeler working in academia or industry, you’ve likely faced the frustration of syncing complex projects across devices or collaborators. Multiple files, scattered notes, simulation outputs, embedded scripts—keeping everything together and making it shareable can be tedious.
SAMSON Documents offer a solution: they are self-contained project files that store not only molecular models, but also any embedded files (including entire folders, Python scripts, images, data files, etc.). These documents can be shared securely with collaborators via SAMSON Connect, making collaboration smoother and more reliable.
Working With Shared Documents
With SAMSON Connect, you can:
- Download documents shared by others.
- Publish your own work with control over who can view or edit it.
- Sync molecular projects across your devices.
Downloading Shared Documents
To download a document shared with you or publicly available in SAMSON Connect:
- Go to Home > Download in the SAMSON interface.
- Browse available shared documents on SAMSON Connect – Documents.
- Select and download the ones you need.

Each document is self-contained, meaning that once you load it, you have access to all the embedded structures, scripts, and data — even when offline.
Sharing Your Work
If you want to share your SAMSON project:
- Click Home > Publish.
- Fill in the document’s name, description, and visibility settings:
- Public: Available to everyone; editing requires access rights.
- Hidden: Shared via link only.
- Restricted: Only visible or editable by designated users.
- Click Publish document. You’ll get a link you can share with collaborators.

Why Use Shared Documents?
Thanks to its universal file embedding and document sharing features, SAMSON enables researchers to:
- Eliminate dependency on external folders or ZIP archives.
- Ensure reproducibility and consistency when exchanging models, simulations, and scripts.
- Facilitate peer review, collaboration, and joint publications more smoothly.
For example, you might have a molecular study with a PDB structure, a custom Python analysis script, and some plots. Just embed everything into a SAMSON Document and share it safely with your co-authors. No loose files, no confusion.
