Mastering Path Recording in Molecular Animations

For molecular modelers striving to capture complex atomic trajectories in their animations, SAMSON provides an intuitive and powerful feature: the Record path animation. This tool helps users record atoms’ movements during molecular presentations, effectively visualizing intricate interactions in a clear and reproducible format. This blog post delves into how to use this feature and why it can be a game-changer for your modeling workflows.

Why Record Path Matters

Understanding atomic trajectories is critical in molecular modeling, whether you’re simulating molecular dynamics, docking processes, or even atomic assembly. However, accurately capturing and visualizing these movements can be challenging. The Record path animation provides a solution by recording the atoms’ positional changes as a track, allowing you to study and communicate these trajectories more effectively.

Setting Up Record Path in SAMSON

To start using the Record path animation, simply follow these steps:

a) Open the Animation panel in the SAMSON Animator.

b) Double-click on the Record path animation effect. A keyframe will appear in the current frame, which you can reposition if needed.

The intuitive color system of the track provides you a clear visual indication:

  • Green: Positions have been successfully recorded.
  • Red: Positions are unrecorded or invalid.

Use this indicator to ensure all atomic movements are captured correctly in your animation.

Tips for Leveraging the Animator

Here are some best practices for working efficiently with the Record path feature:

  • Animations execute in a top-down order in the Animator. Place Record path after other animations affecting atomic positions to ensure accurate tracking.
  • You can enable or disable path recording for performance improvements. This is useful during the preparation stage or once the path is finalized. Simply toggle this option in the Inspector or via a right-click on the Record path animation in the Animator.
  • If disabled, the animation controllers will be darkened, serving as a visual reminder.

Exporting Recorded Paths

After completing your recording and ensuring a fully green animation track, you can export the path as a Path node. Use one of the following methods:

  • Click Create path via the Inspector.
  • Right-click the Record path animation in the Animator and select Create path.

Exporting the path allows you to reuse or share these paths seamlessly within SAMSON documents, aiding collaborative research and efficient presentations.
