Streamline Molecular Animations with the Record Path Feature in SAMSON

As a molecular modeler, keeping track of molecular trajectories while presenting or simulating processes can be a central challenge, especially when working with dynamic systems. The Record path animation in SAMSON provides a tailored solution, allowing you to record atom trajectories seamlessly as paths during your animations. This feature not only ensures you can preserve critical motion data but also integrates fluidly with other animations, saving you time and enhancing the clarity of your molecular presentations. Below, we cover how to successfully leverage this feature for your molecular modeling projects.

What is the Record path Animation?

The Record path animation is essentially designed to capture the pathways atoms take during your molecular animations. It creates a track that chronologically records atomic positions. Whether you are simulating a molecule using the Simulate animation, assembling molecules with the Assemble animation, or docking molecules with Dock, the Record path animation ensures that the travel histories of these atoms are preserved for review or utilization in further analyses.

How to Add and Manage the Record path Animation

Activating the Record path animation is straightforward:

  • First, navigate to the SAMSON Animation panel within the Animator.
  • Double-click on the Record path animation. This will add a keyframe at the current frame of your timeline. Adjust the position of this keyframe as needed to align with your animation goals.

As the animation advances, the track uses color coding to visually indicate recording progress:

  • Green segments: Positions have been successfully recorded.
  • Red segments: Positions are either unrecorded or invalidated.

Tip: To ensure accurate recordings, place the Record path animation after others that modify atomic positions since the Animator processes animations top-down in its sequence.

Flexibility and Performance Optimization

You have control over whether to enable or disable path recording at any point, which can be particularly useful for performance optimization. For instance:

  • When actively preparing and testing animations, you might disable recording to focus on smooth playback without the overhead of tracking positions.
  • For finalized presentations or when the paths are complete, you can enable recording again to capture final data.

To make these adjustments, simply right-click on the Record path animation in the Animator and select “Enable recording” or use the Inspector to toggle recording settings.

Exporting and Using Recorded Paths

Once your path has been fully recorded (indicated by a fully green animation track), you can export it as a document node for further use. This can be done in two ways:

  • Click on Create path in the Inspector of the animation.
  • Or, right-click on the Record path animation in the Animator and choose Create path.

Exporting paths not only helps you maintain a record of molecular behavior but also allows you to reuse these trajectories for further analysis or illustrative purposes in other projects.
