Molecular modelers often face the challenge of presenting dynamic visualizations of structures, particularly when they need to emphasize specific molecular components during animations. Imagine a scenario where you want critical elements to “flash” briefly into view to direct attention, but without affecting other properties like transparency. This is where SAMSON’s Flash animation comes in handy.
The Flash animation allows you to make selected nodes in your molecular model appear and disappear at specific keyframes. What sets it apart is that it operates by toggling the visibility of nodes, rather than altering their transparency, ensuring a straightforward and clean animation workflow. Below, we’ll guide you step-by-step on how to harness the power of Flash animations in your molecular visualizations.
Step-by-Step: Adding the Flash Animation
Here’s how to integrate the Flash animation into your workflow:
- Select nodes: Start by choosing the molecular nodes you wish to show or hide during the animation. These could include atoms, residues, or larger structures depending on your focus.
- Activate Flash: Head to the Animation panel in SAMSON’s Animator. Double-click on the Flash effect to apply it to your selected nodes.
- Understand the keyframes: The Flash animation inherently includes 4 keyframes:
- Keyframes 1 to 2: Nodes remain hidden.
- Keyframe 2: Nodes become visible and stay visible until keyframe 3.
- Keyframe 3: Nodes become hidden again and remain hidden until keyframe 4.
- Adjust keyframe timing: Customize the timing and positioning of these keyframes to suit your presentation’s flow.
Here’s a visual example demonstrating the behavior of Flash animation:

As you can see, the nodes appear, stay visible, and then disappear seamlessly, allowing for highly intuitive presentations of molecular structures or processes.
Refining Your Flash Animation with Properties
To create animations with even more polish, you can adjust the Easing curve. By modifying how the parameters are interpolated between keyframes—such as using a smooth or stepped curve—you can fine-tune the pace of visibility changes and achieve the precise effect you’re aiming for.

Why Use Flash Animation?
The ability to emphasize molecular elements during specific moments is invaluable in fields like research presentations, education, or collaborative discussions. Flash animations enable this emphasis, ensuring clarity without overcomplicating your visualization.
With its ease of use and seamless integration, the Flash animation can save hours of work and lead to visually striking molecular presentations.
