In molecular modeling, clear and precise visualization is a key component of both analysis and presentation. Adding labels to molecular models is a practical way to highlight specific structural features, measurements, or annotations. Labels help contextualize data and ensure effective communication in research or educational settings. Here, we’ll explore how to add and customize labels in the SAMSON integrative molecular design platform.
Why Use Labels in Molecular Modeling?
Labels can greatly enhance the understanding of complex molecular structures by displaying essential details in the Viewport. For example, you can use labels to:
- Identify key nodes such as molecules, residues, or atoms.
- Annotate groups of nodes for clarity.
- Illustrate measurements like bond lengths or angles.
By making these elements explicit, your molecular models become both more organized and informative.
Adding Labels to Your Selection
Adding labels in SAMSON is straightforward. Follow these steps to label your selected structural nodes:
- Select a node or group of nodes in the molecular model. Use the selection tools to adjust the selection filter to include the desired types of nodes, such as atoms or residues.
- In the context toolbar, choose the
label command. You will be presented with two labeling options: - Add label: Creates a single label for the selected group (no labels are added to descendant nodes).
- Add label to…: Allows you to specify the types of descendant nodes that will receive labels. For example, you might label all residues within the selected group.
Once added, labels appear in the Viewport. They are positioned at the geometric center of the nodes by default, but their placement can be adjusted for better visibility.
Adding Labels Directly in the Viewport
You can also add labels directly in the Viewport, offering a more visual approach:
- Activate the
Label editor tool in the left-side menu. - Use keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+L (Windows) or Cmd+L (Mac) to quickly start adding labels.
- Select the desired nodes directly in the Viewport.
Note that the node type eligible for labeling depends on the current selection filter. For example, setting it to “Residues” will ensure labels are only added to residues.
