Molecular modelers often face the challenge of tracking and analyzing atomic trajectories during molecular animations. Whether you’re simulating molecular dynamics or presenting assembly processes, having a clear visualization of these trajectories can significantly enhance your understanding of molecular behavior. SAMSON offers a feature called Record path that simplifies this task and provides an efficient way to record and export atom paths during animations.
The Record Path Animation: What It Does
The Record path animation in SAMSON works by capturing the trajectories of atoms and converting them into a track that you can review, analyze, or export. This feature is particularly useful when used alongside animations like Assemble, Dock, or Simulate, enabling you to record the movement paths resulting from these operations.
Setting Up the Record Path Animation
To begin using this feature, follow these steps:
- Open the Animation panel within the Animator in SAMSON.
- Double-click on the Record path animation effect. A keyframe will automatically be placed at the current frame, but you can move it to another frame if needed.
The animation’s track colors provide visual feedback about the recording progress:
- Green segments: Positions have been successfully recorded.
- Red segments: Positions are either not yet recorded or invalid.

Optimizing Path Recording
When adding multiple animations, it’s essential to prioritize the execution order. In SAMSON’s Animator, animations run from top to bottom. To ensure accurate recording, place the Record path animation below the animations you wish to capture.
For scenarios where performance is critical—such as when tweaking presentations—you can temporarily disable path recording. This can be done in the Inspector of the animation or by right-clicking its control in the Animator and selecting Enable recording. Note that disabled recording will be indicated by darkened controllers.
Exporting the Recorded Path
Once the Record path animation turns fully green (indicating all positions are successfully recorded), you can export the captured paths. To do this:
- In the Inspector, click on the Create path button.
- Alternatively, right-click the Record path animation in the Animator and choose Create path.
Exporting a path enables you to further analyze or share the data with colleagues during collaborative projects.

Why Use the Record Path Feature?
For molecular modelers, understanding atom trajectories can unveil critical insights into molecular interactions, energy landscapes, and more. The Record path feature offers a straightforward way to record and manage these trajectories, saving valuable time and simplifying workflows.
