Effortless Modular Upgrades: Managing SAMSON Extensions

Molecular modelers often face the challenge of needing highly specific tools for their analysis, only to be bogged down by complicated installation processes or compatibility issues. The SAMSON platform offers a solution through its flexible and user-friendly system of modular extensions, or SAMSON Extensions. In this post, we’ll explore how to add, manage, and remove these extensions effortlessly to adapt SAMSON precisely to your needs.

What are SAMSON Extensions?

SAMSON Extensions are modules that provide additional functionality to the SAMSON Platform. Whether you need tools for molecular dynamics, visualization, or accessing cutting-edge algorithms, there’s likely a SAMSON Extension for your task. Users can browse and add these extensions from the Marketplace which is integrated within SAMSON Connect, the hub for everything SAMSON.

How To Add SAMSON Extensions?

Adding new SAMSON Extensions is a straightforward process:

  • Sign in to your SAMSON Connect account. If you don’t have an account yet, you can create a free one in minutes.
  • Access the Marketplace on SAMSON Connect and explore the available extensions. Each extension has a dedicated page providing descriptions, supported operating systems, and version compatibility.
  • If you want a free extension, simply click on the Add button while signed in. The extension will immediately be marked as “Added.”
  • Restart the SAMSON application. The added extension will be downloaded and installed automatically upon restarting.

Trial and Subscription Options

Not all SAMSON Extensions are free; some are available through a subscription model. But don’t worry, you can try extensions before committing to a subscription:

  • For extensions with subscription trials, click on the Request trial button. No credit card information is required for trials.
  • Once added as a trial, the extension will be marked as “Trying.”
  • If an extension meets your needs, subscribe to it directly through its page. Subscriptions can be for either monthly or yearly plans, with academic discounts available.

Managing and Removing Extensions

Over time, your project requirements may change, and extensions that were once essential might no longer be needed. Here’s how to manage or remove extensions:

  • To remove an extension, go to the Marketplace or Account > Settings in SAMSON Connect.
  • Find the extension you want to remove and open its page.
  • Hover over the Added button; it will change to a Remove button. Click it to remove the extension.
