Effortlessly Focus on Atoms with SAMSON’s Camera Animation

Molecular modelers often face the challenge of maintaining a clear and steady view of a selected part of a molecular system, especially when animating complex trajectories. The Look at atoms animation feature in SAMSON provides an elegant solution by ensuring the camera’s focus remains on specific atoms, without altering the camera’s position. This makes staying visually aligned with the region of interest much easier, even during dynamic animations.

Why “Look at atoms” is a Game-Changer

Imagine analyzing the motion of a molecular complex where you need to follow a key region, such as an active site or a specific interaction, over time. The Look at atoms animation makes this possible by dynamically adjusting the camera’s target to follow the geometric center of the selected atoms. The camera position stays fixed, allowing for consistent visualization of the system’s environment while highlighting the selected focus area. This functionality is particularly useful for creating tutorials, reviewing simulation trajectories, or collaborating with others.

How to Add the Animation

Getting started with this feature is straightforward. Follow these steps:

  • Select the atoms you wish the camera to focus on.
  • Orient the view/camera to the desired position.
  • Open the Animation Panel in the Animator interface.
  • Specify the start frame in the Animator’s Track view.
  • Double-click on the “Look at atoms” animation effect in the Animation Panel.
  • Configure the start and end frames of the animation as needed.

Between the keyframes, the camera’s target will shift automatically to follow the geometric center of the specified atoms. You can adjust the camera path and make further modifications at any point.

Flexibility with Camera Setup

The Look at atoms animation offers adjustable properties for more refined control. For instance, the animation is applied by default to the active camera. This can be modified by inspecting the animation and turning off the Apply to active camera option. You can also control whether the camera maintains an upwards orientation relative to the grid by toggling the Keep camera upwards option.

Moreover, even if you adjust the camera’s position manually during the animation, the camera target will consistently remain centered on the selected atoms. This ensures a focused visualization throughout.

Visualize with Intuitive Controls

This feature allows molecular modelers to visualize atomic trajectories in a manner that is both insightful and easy to interpret. By ensuring the target region remains centered, distractions from unrelated parts of the system are minimized. Being able to lock onto regions of interest simplifies analysis and makes the process of creating animations for presentations or publications much smoother.
