Creating breathtaking molecular animations often requires precision, especially when adjusting camera angles or atom movements. A common pain point for molecular modelers is managing such adjustments effectively to produce seamless animations that tell a story. This is where SAMSON’s animation controllers shine. If you’re exploring molecular dynamics or crafting a presentation, understanding animation controllers is essential for a polished outcome.
What are Animation Controllers?
Animation controllers in SAMSON provide an intuitive way to fine-tune various animation parameters like camera positions or motion trajectories. For example, if you’re animating a molecule docking or orbiting around a structure, controllers allow you to tweak the camera’s target or rotation path interactively.
When animations such as Move camera or Move atoms are applied, specialized visual aids (controllers) appear in SAMSON’s viewport. These controllers are linked to each animation’s keyframes, represented as numbers near visual elements for easier adjustments.
Making the Most of Animation Controllers
Let’s explore some tips:
- Zoom Out for a Clear View – If you don’t see the controllers right away, try zooming out in the viewport using the mouse scroll button or pressing Ctrl (or Cmd on macOS) + -.
- Fine-Tune Camera Orientations – Use the controllers to adjust the target point or camera’s orientation. For example, the Orbit camera animation showcases how easily the camera’s central point and rotation axis can be refined.
- Frame the Best Shots – Thanks to SAMSON’s Thumbnails feature, thumbnails automatically appear at the bottom of the viewport when modifying camera positions. These snapshots represent the current keyframe and help align perspectives with previous and next keyframes, ensuring a smooth transition in your animation.

Controlling Visibility of Animation Controllers
By default, animation controllers are displayed in the viewport while editing animations. However, if you need to hide or show them, you can do so from the Document view. Simply right-click on the animation in the list and select “Hide/Show animation controllers” in the context menu.
Notably, SAMSON hides these controllers automatically when playing a presentation or exporting it as a movie. You can modify this behavior in Preferences under Rendering > Presentations.
Ensure a Seamless Workflow
By leveraging animation controllers, you ensure precision and creativity in your molecular animations. Whether it’s optimizing camera paths or highlighting events like docking and assembly, these tools transform your workflow and bring clarity to even the most complex presentations.
