Creating captivating molecular presentations often comes down to how effectively the camera movements reflect the story you want to share. This is where the Move camera animation in SAMSON becomes a powerful tool, allowing molecular modelers to choreograph seamless transitions by using keyframes. If you’ve struggled with achieving dynamic and fluid camera movements, this guide to adding and handling keyframes will help you get started.
What Are Keyframes?
Keyframes represent critical points in an animation where specific properties of an object — in this case, the camera — are set. SAMSON interpolates between these keyframes to create smooth, continuous movement across your animation sequence.
Adding Keyframes to Your Camera Animation
Let’s walk through the steps to add keyframes to enhance your animations:
- Firstly, orient the camera to the desired position in your scene.
- In the Animator’s Track view, navigate to the frame where you wish to set this camera position as a keyframe.
- Left-click directly within the animation track to add the keyframe, or right-click and select Add keyframe from the menu.
Repeat this process to add as many keyframes as required throughout your animation. The resulting interpolation will ensure a smooth transition between camera positions at different keyframes, enhancing the cohesiveness of your presentation.
Note
You can adjust the placement of keyframes along the animation track if needed, offering significant flexibility to refine timing and transitions.
Fine-Tuning Your Animation
To make your animations truly stand out, SAMSON offers several properties you can adjust:
- If you’d prefer the camera always stays level, enable the Keep camera upwards option. This behavior adapts to whether the grid is switched on or off in your scene.
- You can modify how smoothly or dynamically camera movements are interpolated using the Easing curve. Choose the easing type that best fits the flow of your animation.
Removing Keyframes
If a keyframe no longer fits your animation:
- In the Animator’s Track view, locate the keyframe you wish to remove.
- Right-click on the keyframe and select Remove keyframe. This action eliminates the unnecessary data, simplifying your animation.
By mastering these controls, you’ll be well-equipped to build engaging presentations for molecular modeling, with the camera movements naturally guiding your viewers’ focus through your scientific story.
