Mastering Presentation Timing with the Pause Animation in SAMSON

Creating captivating molecular presentations often boils down to precise timing. As molecular modelers, we sometimes wish to emphasize a critical structure or transitional state by stopping the flow of a presentation momentarily. This is where the Pause animation in SAMSON becomes indispensable.

Why Use the Pause Animation?

In molecular modeling presentations, pacing plays a vital role in effectively communicating your message. Overloading your audience with rapid transitions can dilute comprehension, while strategic pauses allow viewers to absorb key moments. The Pause animation does precisely this by stopping the animation at a selected frame for a specific number of seconds. Whether you aim to explain a critical intermediate configuration of a molecule or highlight a complex interaction, the Pause animation offers a simple and powerful solution.

Adding the Pause Animation

Incorporating the Pause animation into your presentation is straightforward. Within SAMSON’s Animation panel of the Animator, double-click on the Pause animation to add it at the current frame. If the initial placement isn’t ideal, don’t worry—you can move the keyframe to the desired position easily. This offers flexibility in fine-tuning your presentation to match your narrative intent.

Note

You can always adjust the keyframe positions at any point to suit your timing needs.

Customizing Pause Duration

The real utility of the Pause animation lies in its customization. After adding the animation, you can set the duration of the pause directly through the Inspector. Simply select the Pause animation node in the Document view and inspect it to enter the desired number of seconds. This ensures your animation aligns perfectly with the key points you’d like to emphasize.

Here’s a visual example illustrating how the Pause animation might appear in the Inspector:

When to Use Pause Effectively?

Knowing when and how to use a pause can make all the difference in your animation’s impact. Here are some scenarios where introducing a pause becomes invaluable:

  • Highlighting a key interaction in a complex molecular pathway.
  • Focusing the viewer’s attention on a specific molecular conformation.
  • Allowing yourself or another presenter to explain a particular structure without missing the moment of interest.

By pausing at the right moments, your audience gets the breathing space they need to delve deeper into critical facets of your animation.
