Mastering Static Views with the Hold Camera Animation in SAMSON

For molecular modelers working on detailed animations, maintaining a consistent camera perspective can be a common challenge. As you modify your model, interact with the system, or cycle through animations, the camera view can unintentionally drift, disrupting your work. Thankfully, the Hold Camera animation feature in SAMSON provides a simple solution to lock your ideal view in place while you focus on creating seamless animations.

Why Use the Hold Camera Animation?

The Hold Camera animation brings a fixed perspective to your workflow, ensuring stability between frames where no other camera animations are applied. If you’re preparing a visually cohesive presentation or need to maintain a defined static view while altering other elements in your system, this feature is essential. Without it, camera adjustments made during editing or other animations may unintentionally alter your desired perspective.

How to Set Up the Hold Camera Animation

Follow these straightforward steps to utilize the Hold Camera feature effectively in SAMSON:

  1. Choose your start frame: Open the Animator’s Track view, and select the starting frame for your desired camera position.
  2. Orient the camera: Use the tools in SAMSON to adjust the view and position the camera exactly as you want it to remain during the animation.
  3. Add the Hold Camera effect: Navigate to the Animation panel in the Animator. Double-click on the Hold Camera animation effect to apply it.
  4. Set the end frame: Determine where the animation should finish and define the end frame for the Hold Camera effect accordingly.

Customizing and Tweaking

One of the advantages of the Hold Camera animation is its flexibility. You can always move its start and end frames within the Animator’s Track view, allowing you to refine and adapt the animation to your evolving needs. This adaptability ensures that you can smoothly integrate the Hold Camera effect into any complex animation workflow.

A Visual Example

To better understand how the Hold Camera animation operates, here’s an example GIF demonstrating the feature in action:

Example: the Hold camera animation

As shown in the example above, the camera view remains static while other changes occur in the system, ensuring that the desired perspective is preserved throughout the frames.

Important Note

As a practical reminder: some older SAMSON tutorials may reference the Animation menu, which has since been replaced. All animation effects, including Hold Camera, can now be accessed conveniently through the Animation panel in the Animator section. Additionally, other presentation controls and settings are managed directly through the Animator’s interface.
