For molecular modelers, ensuring compatibility with specific workflows or legacy systems often means accessing older versions of software. If you're using SAMSON, you may occasionally need to install a previous version of the platform. Luckily, SAMSON makes this process straightforward, and here's how you can do it efficiently.
Why Install an Older Version of SAMSON?
There are various reasons why a user might need a previous version of SAMSON:
- Compatibility: An older SAMSON Extension may require a specific version of SAMSON.
- Reproducibility: You might need to replicate results based on a previous setup.
- Stability: A newer release might include changes that temporarily disrupt your workflows.
Steps to Install an Older SAMSON Version
Fortunately, you don't need a separate installer for older versions—just follow these steps:
1. Use the SAMSON Installer
Download the regular SAMSON installer and launch it. Upon reaching the second step, check the option labeled Install an older version. This is shown in the image below:

2. Select Your Desired Version
You will be presented with a list of earlier versions of SAMSON to choose from. Note that the versions are listed by their developer version numbers. For instance, version 2.0.2 corresponds to the 2021 release of SAMSON. Consult the User Guides for other SAMSON versions to match the developer version number with the release year if needed.

3. Launching the Appropriate Version
If you have multiple versions of SAMSON installed, ensure you are launching the correct version. Here are the paths for different operating systems:
- Windows:
C:/Users/%USERNAME%/OneAngstrom/SAMSON-Application/11.0.0/Binaries/SAMSON-Core.exe - MacOS:
$HOME/Applications/SAMSON.app/ - Linux:
$HOME/OneAngstrom/SAMSON-Application/11.0.0/Binaries/SAMSON-Core.sh
Safeguards and Notes
Before installing an older version, you may want to back up any data or configurations related to your current version. Remember that older versions might not support the latest extensions or updates available. This may limit certain functionalities, so consider your project needs carefully.
