Optimizing Label Visibility for Molecular Models

For molecular modelers, clarity is paramount when analyzing complex molecular systems. Keeping track of nodes like molecules, residues, or atoms within a model can be a challenge, especially when working with dense structures where labels enhance communication and visualization. But what happens when there are too many labels cluttering the Viewport? Optimizing label visibility can significantly improve your workflow and focus during analysis.

In SAMSON, you have the ability to fine-tune label visibility dynamically. Here’s a simple guide to make sure your labels remain useful without overcrowding your view:

Adjusting Visibility Dynamically

SAMSON utilizes progressive visibility for labels, meaning their presence in the Viewport adjusts automatically based on zoom level. When zoomed out, smaller nodes (e.g., atoms) will hide their labels while labels for larger nodes (e.g., molecules) become visible. This ensures a clean workspace while still conveying important structural information.

However, you might have specific needs where certain labels need custom visibility radii. For instance, you might want labels for key residues to be visible regardless of zoom level. To achieve this:

  • Select the desired label(s) in the Viewport.
  • Open the Inspector.
  • Change the maximum and minimum display radii. These options determine the zoom levels at which labels will appear or disappear.

Fine-tuning these radii helps highlight critical information while keeping your visual representation tidy and informative.

Show/Hide Labels On Demand

If you’re switching between tasks, you might need to temporarily show or hide selected labels in the model. SAMSON provides an easy way to toggle label visibility via the Document view:

  • Tick or untick labels in the Document view to toggle visibility instantly.

This feature ensures adaptability, whether you’re analyzing specific molecular groups or preparing clean visuals for presentation.

Why Focus on Label Visibility?

By intentionally managing label visibility, you reduce distractions and direct attention to the most meaningful portions of your model. Whether it’s preparing visuals for publication, presenting to colleagues, or conducting detailed atomic analyses, optimized label visibility keeps your focus where it matters most.
