Creating effective molecular presentations often involves more than just showcasing data—it’s about setting the right tone, maintaining audience focus, and conveying critical insights visually. A clean, customizable background can help achieve these goals by reinforcing your presentation’s narrative. SAMSON’s Set background animation feature makes this process easy and visually compelling by enabling smooth, interpolated transitions between backgrounds across frames.
Why background animations matter in molecular modeling
In molecular modeling, presentations often serve as a bridge between complex data and actionable insights. However, static backgrounds may not always suffice—switching between slides or transitioning a visual focus can feel abrupt without smooth background control. By using interpolated background animations, your molecular presentations can gain an added level of professionalism that keeps viewers engaged and your visuals cohesive.
Adding and configuring background animations
To add a Set background animation in SAMSON, navigate to the Animation panel of the Animator. Simply double-click the Set background animation effect after selecting the desired frame. A keyframe representing the animation’s starting point is then added automatically. You can subsequently adjust the keyframes to enhance timing and visual flow.
Note:
Keyframes can always be moved to provide flexibility in synchronizing your animations with other elements such as molecular structures or annotations.
Here’s how the animation transitions work:
- At
Keyframe 1, the specified background is set. - If another background animation is defined after
Keyframe 2, SAMSON will automatically interpolate between these backgrounds.

Enhancing transitions with easing curves
One of the standout features of the Set background animation is the ability to fine-tune transitions using easing curves. Easing curves allow you to control how parameters are interpolated between frames, whether you want a gradual, smooth change or a more dynamic effect. For instance, opting for linear interpolation produces steady transitions, while cubic easing can create smoother, more natural changes between backgrounds.

This flexibility is particularly useful for aligning visual effects with the pacing of a spoken presentation or the rhythm of other animations in your molecular model. For example, transitioning from a plain gradient to a branded background could help emphasize a critical section of the presentation, seamlessly guiding your audience through the narrative.
Get started today
The Set background animation in SAMSON isn’t just a visual tool—it’s a way to elevate the storytelling potential of your molecular work. Shifting between backgrounds in a controlled and visually engaging manner encourages your viewers to focus on the story you want to tell without unnecessary distractions.
