Creating engaging molecular presentations can be a challenge for many molecular modelers. One of the major pain points is presenting complex models while keeping visual clarity and emphasizing key structures in a progressive manner. The Appear animation effect in SAMSON provides a valuable solution that allows you to gradually make parts of your molecular models visible, ensuring your audience follows the key aspects step-by-step.
What is the Appear Animation?
The Appear animation is designed to progressively reveal specific nodes in your molecular models. This is especially useful when working with nodes that have transparency attributes, such as structural models, visual models, meshes, and labels.
For example, if you’re working on a structural model, you can apply this animation to the entire model to make atoms, bonds, or other components fade into visibility seamlessly. If the nodes lack transparency attributes, the behavior of this animation will mirror that of the Show animation. However, to control the transparency of individual atoms or bonds, apply the animation to the structural model, as these attributes are model-specific.
How Does It Work?
When you add the Appear animation to selected nodes in SAMSON, the process involves four keyframes:
- Between keyframes 1 and 2: The nodes remain fully transparent.
- Between keyframes 2 and 3: The nodes gradually reduce their transparency, creating the appearance effect.
- Between keyframes 3 and 4: The nodes become fully opaque.
You can adjust the timing of the keyframes to suit your specific needs. For instance, a slower transition can help emphasize the importance of a particular region of your model, while a faster transition can be used to highlight broader context quickly.
How to Add the Appear Animation
To apply the Appear animation, follow these steps:
- Select the nodes that you wish to progressively make visible.
- Double-click on the Appear animation effect in the Animation panel of the Animator.
- Customize the keyframe settings as needed by dragging them along the timeline in the Animator.
Below is an example demonstration of the Appear animation in action:

You can also refine the transition effect between keyframes by modifying the Easing curve, which interpolates how parameters gradually change during the animation.
Why Use the Appear Animation?
The Appear animation enables molecular modelers to:
- Enhance the clarity of complex molecular presentations.
- Guide the viewers’ focus precisely where it’s needed.
- Create dynamic and visually compelling animations without overwhelming the audience.
Whether you’re preparing for a lecture, a scientific presentation, or demonstration, this tool helps to present your molecular models in a structured and engaging manner.
