Molecular modeling often involves presenting atomic movements to communicate findings or to simulate various scenarios. But what if you could not only visualize these movements but also record and analyze them later? SAMSON's Record path animation feature offers a highly effective way to record atoms' trajectories during your presentation. If you've ever struggled with manually tracking molecular pathways during animations, this capability might be exactly what you need. Here, we’ll explore how to use and optimize this feature for your molecular design needs.
What is the Record Path Animation?
The Record path animation in SAMSON allows you to record the trajectories of atoms in the form of a path. This means you can dynamically track how atomic positions evolve during animations influenced by other effects, such as Assemble or Simulate. This functionality enables users to revisit and analyze recorded molecular trajectories, saving significant time and effort while providing a streamlined workflow.
Adding and Configuring the Animation
To add this animation, simply double-click on the Record path effect in the Animation panel of the Animator. The animation’s keyframe will immediately appear at the current frame. You’re free to move the keyframe into the desired position.
As the animation progresses, SAMSON visually indicates the recording status of the path using two colors on the animation’s track:
- Green segments: Trajectories successfully recorded.
- Red segments: Trajectories not yet recorded or invalidated.

Optimizing Record Path Performance
It’s crucial to optimize your recording workflows to avoid performance bottlenecks. For instance, during the preparation phase of your presentation, you can enable or disable the path recording. Disabling the recording can improve performance while ensuring smoother animations. Here’s how you can toggle this setting:
- Access the Inspector of the animation to enable or disable recording.
- Alternatively, right-click the animation within the Animator panel and select Enable recording to toggle it.
When recording is disabled, the animation’s controllers are visually darkened, providing a clear indication of the animation’s current state.
Exporting Recorded Paths
Once you’ve completed recording the path (indicated by a fully green animation), you can export the path as a new node in the project document. To create the path node:
- In the animation’s Inspector, click on Create path.
- Alternatively, right-click on the Record path animation in the Animator and choose Create path.

Why the Record Path Feature Matters
Recording molecular trajectories isn’t just about creating visually appealing presentations – it’s an essential feature for better accuracy, analysis, and communication. Whether you’re experimenting with docking mechanisms or simulating reactions, automated trajectory tracking saves time, enhances clarity, and facilitates future references or validations.
