For molecular modelers, creating realistic and precise animations of molecular trajectories can be both fascinating and challenging. A common pain point is ensuring that atomic movements are accurately tracked over time to showcase changes, dynamics, or results of simulations effectively. SAMSON’s ‘Record Path’ animation provides a seamless solution to this by allowing you to capture atoms’ trajectories in detail, blending creativity with computational precision.
Why Record Paths?
Recording paths is essential when you need to retain a visual account of atoms’ movements influenced by animations such as Assemble, Dock, Move Atoms, or Simulate. By doing so, you can create richer molecular presentations, analyze these trajectories later, or even export them for further documentation and study.
Adding the ‘Record Path’ Animation
To start recording molecular trajectories, simply double-click on the ‘Record Path’ animation effect in the Animation panel of the Animator. The animation keyframe will be added to the current frame, but you can move it as needed to adjust timing. You can also layer it with other animations to ensure precise control over the data you record.
Path progress is visually indicated by the color of the track:
- Green segments: Indicate that positions have been recorded successfully.
- Red segments: Indicate that positions have not yet been recorded or have been invalidated.

Optimize with Smart Tips
To enhance your workflow while working with the ‘Record Path’ animation, consider these tips:
- Place the ‘Record Path’ animation below other animations you aim to record, as SAMSON executes animations from top to bottom within the Animator.
- You can enable or disable path recording for performance reasons. For example, disable it while building your presentation and re-enable it only when finalizing trajectories. Use the Inspector or right-click the animation in the Animator to change the recording settings. Disabled recording will appear darkened in the animation controls.
- Feel free to rearrange the keyframes to adjust the animation’s timeline until it suits your needs.
Exporting the Recorded Path
Once your animation has recorded the full trajectory (indicated by the track turning entirely green), you can export the path for further use. Here’s how you can do it:
- In the Inspector, click the ‘Create Path’ button for the animation.
- Alternatively, right-click on the ‘Record Path’ animation within the Animator and select ‘Create Path’.
This creates a ‘Path’ node and embeds the recorded molecular motion into your document for extended usability or presentations.

Understanding how to manage molecular trajectories will improve your capabilities as a modeler and open up more creative and analytical possibilities. To learn more, please visit the full documentation page here: Record Path Animation Documentation.
