Molecular modeling often involves presenting dynamic visualizations to communicate complex information about structure and behavior. One common challenge is keeping track of the movements of atoms during these animations and effectively documenting their trajectories. The Record path animation in SAMSON offers an intuitive and efficient way to achieve precisely that.
What is the Record Path Animation?
The Record path animation is a tool that records atomic trajectories as paths during your presentations in SAMSON. This feature is especially useful when combining it with animations that alter atomic positions, such as Assemble, Dock, or Simulate. By enabling Record path, you can capture and visualize the resulting motion paths in your molecular animations.
How to Add the Animation
Adding Record path to your Animator timeline is straightforward:
- Double-click on the Record path animation effect in the Animation panel.
- A keyframe will automatically be placed at the current frame. Adjust its position in the timeline, if needed.
The progress of the recording is color-coded for clarity: green segments indicate successfully recorded positions, while red segments denote areas where positions are yet to be recorded or have become invalid. This makes it easy to monitor your work at a glance.

Pro Tips for Efficient Path Recording
- Order matters: In the Animator, animations are executed from top to bottom. To ensure accurate recordings, place the Record path animation below the animations it should track.
- Performance optimization: Enable or disable path recording for better performance. For example, you might disable recording during presentation edits or once the full path has been captured. You can toggle this option in the Inspector or by right-clicking the animation in the Animator to toggle Enable recording.
- Flexible keyframes: Don’t forget that you can freely move the keyframes for precise control.
When recording is disabled, animation controllers will appear darkened for easy identification of their status.
Exporting the Recorded Path
Once you’ve played the presentation and fully recorded the path (indicated by a fully green animation track), you can export it as a Path node in your document. You have two options for creating this node:
- Click on Create path in the Inspector.
- Right-click on the Record path animation in the Animator and select Create path.

By exporting the path, you create a permanent record of the trajectory that can be reused or adjusted for further analysis or presentation purposes within your molecular modeling workflows.
