If you are a molecular modeler, you’ve likely encountered the need to highlight specific molecular nodes or sequences during your animation without overcomplicating the visualization. Whether for presentations, research insights, or interactive storytelling, an animation that controls when nodes appear or disappear can significantly enhance comprehension and engagement. This is where the Flash animation in SAMSON becomes particularly useful.
The Flash animation in SAMSON is designed to smoothly make molecular nodes appear at one keyframe and disappear at another. Unlike manipulating transparency, this effect directly toggles the visibility of nodes. This feature is ideal for creating clear and focused animations that guide viewers through complex molecular scenes.
How to Add Flash Animation
To work with Flash animation, start by identifying the nodes you want to show and hide in your animation. Next, follow this simple process:
- Access the Animation panel in the Animator tool.
- Double-click on the Flash animation effect.
Flash animation includes four keyframes that allow pinpoint control over node visibility:
- Keyframes 1 and 2: The nodes will remain hidden.
- Keyframe 2: The nodes will become visible, and they stay visible until keyframe 3.
- Keyframe 3: The nodes are hidden again, remaining so until keyframe 4.
You can move these keyframes as needed to tailor the timing of your animation. This flexibility ensures the animation aligns seamlessly with the narrative of your molecular visualization.

Fine-Tuning with the Easing Curve
To refine your Flash animation further, SAMSON lets you adjust the parameters of interpolation between keyframes via the Easing curve. The Easing curve provides smooth transitions, making the visibility shifts more natural and visually appealing.
An intuitive Inspector interface makes it easy to customize the Flash animation options. Below is a visualization of the settings as shown in SAMSON:

Why Use Flash Animation?
Flash animation is particularly useful for:
- Highlighting specific molecules during a presentation.
- Creating dynamic storytelling that shows molecular interactions step-by-step.
- Simplifying complex visuals by displaying only the required nodes at specific moments in the animation.
For molecular modelers who want to create compelling, easy-to-follow animations, Flash provides an effective and efficient solution.
