Adding and Managing Extensions in SAMSON Without the Guesswork

Molecular modeling platforms can be powerful and flexible, but many suffer from a common drawback: it’s hard to customize their functionality without digging through forums or manually managing plug-ins. With SAMSON and its modular extension system, users can smoothly fine-tune their environment—if they know where to look.

This post offers a practical guide to customizing your SAMSON installation by adding, trying, subscribing to, and removing SAMSON Extensions. Whether you’re looking for simulation tools, visualization upgrades, or specialized modeling features, the SAMSON Connect Marketplace centralizes it all. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Browsing the Marketplace

Start by signing in to SAMSON Connect. Then head over to the Marketplace to discover hundreds of extensions available for SAMSON.

Some SAMSON Extensions

Each extension features a dedicated page showing its description, supported operating systems, supported SAMSON versions, and authorship info.

Adding Free Extensions

Many extensions are freely available and can be added with a single click. When you’re signed in, a free extension displays an Add button:

After clicking Add, the button changes to Added:

When you restart SAMSON, the extension is installed automatically.

Trying and Subscribing to Extensions

Some extensions are available through a subscription model and can be explored risk-free using the trial system. Click the Request trial button — no credit card required:

The extension will be labeled as Trying during the trial period:

Ready to commit? You can subscribe to an extension via a monthly or yearly plan. Academic users have access to special pricing:

Managing and Removing Extensions

To remove a free extension, go to your account, then Marketplace or Account > Settings > View my extensions. Find the extension you want to remove, hover over the Added button (which will switch to Remove), then click to remove it.

Your subscription status can be managed from Account > Settings > View my subscriptions:

Removed extensions remain visible in your “View my extensions” section so you can re-enable them easily later.

Final Thoughts

Customizing SAMSON to fit your molecular modeling needs doesn’t require technical acrobatics. With intuitive add/remove tools, trial options, and centralized management, SAMSON’s extension ecosystem makes it easy to stay focused on your research.
