Before You Send the Job Link: A Practical Guide to Sharing Cloud Results

A cloud job can be easy to run and surprisingly easy to hand off badly. A collaborator may not know where to find the results, while a link shared too broadly can expose files to people who do not need them. A simple first step is to decide who should access the job, then choose its visibility accordingly.

In SAMSON, cloud jobs—including jobs run with tools such as AlphaFold, NVIDIA BioNeMo services, and GROMACS—are accessible from SAMSON Connect. Job visibility determines who can see a job or access its files. It is worth checking this setting before sharing results, especially because a job’s default visibility is Restricted.

Choose visibility based on the handoff

  • Public: the job is visible to everyone. Choose this when broad visibility is intended.
  • Hidden: a link is needed to download the files. This can suit a link-based handoff, but treat the link as something to share deliberately.
  • Restricted: specific access rights must be granted to access files or edit job details. This is the default, and is a sensible starting point when access should be limited to named collaborators or a group.

These options answer different needs. “Hidden” is not the same as “restricted”: the documentation describes link access for downloading files, whereas restricted access depends on granted rights. If a job should only be available to particular people, check that those people—or their group—have been granted access.

Find the job and its files

On SAMSON Connect, open Jobs from the user menu to see jobs you created and jobs shared with you. Select a job to access its files. The context menu provides a way to download job files.

Give collaborators the right level of access

If you own a job, you can grant access rights to an individual user or a group. Groups are useful when several people need access to the same project resources: you can organize collaborators together and share jobs with the group rather than managing access person by person. The documentation also describes creating public or private groups on SAMSON Connect.

Job owners and editors can update job details, including the name and notes. Owners can manage access rights. Before handing a job over, consider whether collaborators only need the files or whether the job details also need to be maintained. That distinction helps you decide who should receive access and what role they need.

A quick handoff check: confirm the visibility; grant access to the intended user or group if the job is restricted; then direct collaborators to Jobs on SAMSON Connect. If they need a particular output, identify the relevant file so they can find and download it without guesswork.
