Many molecular modelers appreciate having specialized tools for specific simulations, from free energy estimation to advanced visualization techniques. But customizing your environment without wasting time or disrupting your scientific workflow can be a challenge.
That’s where SAMSON Connect’s Extension Marketplace comes in. If you’re using SAMSON, but haven’t explored its extension system yet, this post will guide you step-by-step through what you can do—and why it matters.
Why Extensions Matter
SAMSON’s core strength lies in its modular architecture. Whether you want to perform quantum chemistry calculations, simulate protein-protein interactions, or use AI tools like AlphaFold, you can do so with dedicated modules called SAMSON Extensions.
Instead of installing a bloated software suite, you just pick what you need. The Marketplace allows you to personalize your modeling experience while keeping the interface focused and lightweight.
Browsing the Marketplace
Head to the Marketplace section of SAMSON Connect to browse available extensions. You can search, filter, and view details about each extension—including supported platforms, the developer, compatibility with your installed SAMSON version, and what plan it’s available for.

Adding an Extension
There are three types of extensions you can add:
- Free: Directly addable with one click.
- Included with your plan: Automatic if your plan supports them.
- Subscription-based: Available for trial or paid subscription.
For free extensions, just click Add. That’s it. When you restart SAMSON, the extension will be downloaded and installed automatically.

Trying or Subscribing
Some advanced extensions are available as subscriptions. If you’re unsure, click Request trial to test the extension. No credit card needed.

If satisfied, you can subscribe to monthly or yearly plans. Academic plans are also available if you qualify.

Removing an Extension
Removing an extension is fast. Go to your Account > Settings > View my extensions. Hover over the Added button—it will switch to Remove. Click it, and the extension will be uninstalled next time you launch SAMSON.

If you wish to manage your subscriptions, you can do so from the View my subscriptions section.

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re new to SAMSON or refining your workflow, the extension system provides an efficient way to work only with the tools you need. It keeps your environment focus-driven while offering the flexibility to experiment, upgrade, or scale down as required.
