Stop Guessing Atom Attributes: A Closer Look at the Inspector in SAMSON

Adjusting atomic-level properties in molecular models often feels more complex than it should be. Whether you’re verifying atom positions, fine-tuning residue groups, or trying to undo an unexpected change, quick access to reliable attribute data is essential. This is where SAMSON’s Inspector can save time and improve precision.

In SAMSON, the Inspector acts as a dynamic properties panel that allows you to view—and in many cases, modify—attributes of selected nodes in real time. This is especially helpful for molecular modelers managing large systems where manual inspection and editing could be overwhelming.

Effortless Access to Detailed Attributes

The Inspector reveals all available attributes of selected nodes. These nodes can be atoms, bonds, residues, or larger molecular structures. Attributes are shown in organized collapsible groups categorized by node type, making it easy to focus on specific sets of properties.

Select a residue, and the Inspector populates with all relevant groups: from its children atoms to bond information and beyond. Select a single atom, and you’ll find modifiable fields like position or element type neatly categorized.

Attributes not only become visible but interactive. While you can’t change an atom’s weight or symbol directly—since these are tied to the element—you can change its element, which automatically updates its dependent attributes.

Edit Many Nodes at Once: Smarter Than Manual Changes

If you’ve ever wanted to move or edit the properties of multiple atoms without affecting their relative positions, you’ll appreciate the Relative option. Turned on by default, this option ensures that transformations preserve the geometry of the original selection—a must-have for structural integrity when adjusting molecular conformation.

Accidentally clicked the wrong value? No problem. You can reset many attributes to their default values with a simple double-click on the label when the cursor changes. This safety net lowers the risk of permanent errors during editing.

Do More with the Attribute Filter

Scrolling through dozens of attribute groups looking for a single property is time-consuming. Fortunately, the Inspector includes a filter bar. Want to focus on positions only? Just type position and non-matching attributes disappear from view—perfect when you’re working on fine-grained adjustments.

Why This Matters

Molecular modelers often work with highly complex systems. SAMSON’s Inspector helps bring clarity to that complexity—enabling focused edits, intelligent grouping, and real-time feedback on structural modifications. Whether you’re modeling atomic-level interactions or verifying attributes before simulation, this tool gives you the precision you need without stopping your workflow.
