A new molecular modeling environment can make a simple first task feel harder than it is. Before you can inspect a structure, you may be deciding whether your computer is supported, where to install the software, which part of the interface matters, and how to get a molecule into the workspace. Trying to learn all of that at once can make onboarding feel like a project of its own.
A more useful approach is to treat your first session as a short sequence of checkpoints. Each checkpoint answers one practical question: Can I run SAMSON? Can I find my way around? Can I open a structure? What should I learn next? You do not need to explore every feature before doing meaningful work.
1. Resolve installation questions first
If SAMSON is not installed on the machine you plan to use, begin by checking Requirements and Platforms. This is the place to confirm operating-system support, graphics requirements, and Linux dependencies before investing time in installation. Then follow Install SAMSON for the installer flow, sign-in steps, and key entry.
If SAMSON is already running on a supported machine, do not let setup material slow you down. Skip directly to the interface and first-structure steps. Separating “get it running” from “learn to use it” makes the path clearer, especially when you are returning to SAMSON on a new workstation.
2. Orient yourself before memorizing controls
Once the application is open, take a moment to identify the main parts of the interface using First look: the interface. The goal is not to memorize every panel. It is to know where to look when a later instruction refers to the interface, and to build a basic map before following detailed steps.
Next, use Moving around to learn viewport controls and the default editors for navigation and selection. This small investment helps prevent a common early frustration: confusing a view-navigation action with an action intended to select or work on objects. When you are unsure, return to the navigation and selection basics rather than guessing at controls.
3. Make the first structure your practical checkpoint
Open or fetch a structure with Loading molecules. This is a useful first milestone because it connects the interface to an actual modeling task. It also introduces where documents, files, and shared data appear, helping you understand not just how to get a structure into the workspace, but where your work is represented.
At this point, pause and ask three questions: Is the structure visible in the viewport? Can I navigate around it? Do I understand which document I am working in? These are simple checks, but they help distinguish an unfamiliar interface from a problem with the structure-loading step. Once those basics are comfortable, you are ready to move on to inspecting, measuring, building, or visualizing structures.
4. Choose help that matches the way you learn
There is no need to use every learning resource in order. If you prefer a compact overview, start with the Quick Start Guide. If you learn best by following steps inside the application, try Interactive tutorials after you have recognized the main interface areas. For questions, commands, selections, or scripts, explore SAMSON AI when it is relevant to your task.
SAMSON Connect is useful when your next step involves downloads, extensions, account settings, or shared documents. It is not a prerequisite for every first session, so you can leave it until one of those needs arises. Webinars can also provide a refresher or feature survey, but they do not have to be your first stop.
A simple route to keep handy
New machine: Requirements and Platforms → Install SAMSON → Getting Started → Quick Start Guide → First look: the interface.
Already installed: Quick Start Guide → First look: the interface → Moving around → Loading molecules.
Prefer guided learning: Quick Start Guide → Interactive tutorials → SAMSON AI.
The practical lesson is to choose a path based on what is blocking you today. Solve setup first only when setup is the obstacle; otherwise, get oriented, load a structure, and let your next modeling question guide what you learn next. For the complete onboarding sequence and links to each step, learn more in the SAMSON Start here documentation.
